Returning a Leased Car with Damage

2022 GMC Hummer EV offroading

Accidents happen even to the best of East Wenatchee drivers, leaving us to deal with the damage. It can be particularly stressful when we cause damage to a leased car. What happens if you damage a leased car? What if there are only minor scratches on the leased car? Don’t panic. Just follow the guide below on returning a leased car with damage.

What Happens if You Damage a Leased Car?

Minor scratches on a leased car may be considered normal wear and tear that you may not be liable for. But you’ll want to check the terms of your lease to make sure. What happens if you damage a leased car beyond that? You are liable for repairing any damage to the leased car. Returning a leased car with damage will normally result in extra fees to cover the cost of those repairs.

Returning a Leased Car with Damage – How to Do It

It’s best to repair any damage to a leased car before you return it. If you’ve found yourself in an accident in your leased vehicle in spite of being careful on our Levanworth roads, follow the steps below:

What to Do When You’ve Caused Damage to a Leased Car

  • File a claim with your insurance company – A leased vehicle is required to be fully insured, so the insurer should take care of the damage.
  • Look at the terms of your warranty – The damage may be covered by warranty. If so, make an appointment with our service center to effect repairs.
  • Use genuine GM OEM parts – Ourcollision and body center will use only genuine OEM parts to repair your GM vehicle. If you use another repair shop, make sure they use only OEM parts to avoid voiding your lease.
  • Schedule a pre-lease return inspection – Having your vehicle inspected ahead of the return date will alert you to any issues that need to be resolved, and answer whether those minor scratches on the leased car are considered normal wear and tear.
